A friend of mine, Rob Hampton, is a guitar teacher here in Seattle. He gives lessons to both kids and adults, and twice a year he has something called the “Coffee Shop Jam.” It’s sort of like a recital, but much cooler and more laid back. The spring 2007 Jam took place at Caffe Bella, a great little coffee shop under the monorail right near 5th and Denny. Each student got up and played a song for the crowd:
Some students had prepared songs to play with each other, and one family of six got together and all played:
This kid sounded like he had some heavy AC/DC influences; he played a song he’d written about his guinea pig:
It was great to see the variety of ages and musical interests on display, and the atmosphere of the whole day was really special. Creative, supportive, and fun. You can see the whole set of photos I took on Rob’s website here.
